The right cruise line is the one built for the kind of trip you want: lively or calm, family-filled or adults-only, freestyle or structured. There's no single "best" line, so start with how you like to spend a day and an evening, then pick the line built for that.
The quick version
- Lively and social: Royal Caribbean and Carnival are at the high-energy end, with big shows, water slides and a busy pool deck. Norwegian and MSC's newest ships are lively too.
- Calm and relaxed: Holland America is the quietest of the major lines. Celebrity and Princess sit in between: relaxed, with good food and service.
- Families first: Disney is designed around families, with clubs for every age group. Royal Caribbean, Carnival and MSC are also very family-friendly.
- Adults only: Virgin Voyages is 18 and over on every ship.
- Freedom over routine: Norwegian pioneered "Freestyle" dining, with no set times or tables.
What decides fit
Four things matter more than any ranking: the pace and energy you want, who's on board with you, how much variety in the included food you want, and whether you like structure or freedom. Our guide which cruise line fits you walks through each one.
I've sailed Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Norwegian and Virgin Voyages. For a lively trip without kids, Virgin is my first choice. With kids along, Carnival edges ahead for its energy, its music and its family-appropriate atmosphere.
