Choose by how much time you'll spend in the room: if you'll mostly sleep there, an interior cabin is the best value, and if you want your own outdoor space and view, a balcony is worth the step up. Ocean view sits in between, and suites add space and perks at a much higher price.
The four types
- Interior: no window, the lowest fare. Very dark at night, which many people sleep well in. Often low and central on the ship, which helps if you're worried about seasickness.
- Ocean view: a window that doesn't open. Natural light and a view, for a little more.
- Balcony: your own small outdoor space. Great for quiet mornings, sail-aways and fresh air.
- Suite: more room, and on many lines extra perks such as priority boarding or a private lounge. Priced well above a balcony.
Who's sharing matters
Fares are per person, so the cabin type changes the total fast for a bigger group. Four people can share some interior cabins, but it's tight; our guide on fitting four into an interior cabin shows the space and the cost compared with two cabins.
What we book: We usually book an interior or a balcony, depending on the cost of the whole trip. When there are other big expenses, such as flights, a pricey hotel the night before (Miami, for example), extra excursions, or bringing the whole family, we book an interior cabin, or two. Otherwise, we book a balcony.
If you're worried about motion
A cabin low and in the middle of the ship moves the least. See our seasickness guide.
