Should I fly in the day before my cruise?

By Cris Bergerhofer, founder of Portamora · October 30, 2026

Yes. If you're flying to your cruise, arrive in the port city the day before. If a flight is delayed and you miss the ship, it won't wait, and you won't get a refund.

Why it's worth the extra night

  • Delays and cancellations happen, especially in winter or during storm season. A day's buffer turns a missed cruise into a minor inconvenience.
  • Boarding day is calmer. You arrive at the terminal rested, early in your boarding window, with no rushing.
  • Your luggage has time to catch up if an airline sends it on a later flight.

What to plan for the extra night

  • A hotel near the port or airport. Many offer shuttles to the cruise terminal; check before you book.
  • Getting to the terminal: hotel shuttle, taxi or rideshare, or the cruise line's own transfer.
  • Parking, if you're driving: most ports have paid parking near the terminal.

The hotel and travel aren't part of the cruise price, so add them to your budget.

If you're driving

Even within driving distance, leave plenty of time on the day. Traffic and long lines at the terminal can add hours.

What I do: When we sail from Galveston, we drive. We leave home in the middle of the night and reach our hotel in Galveston around check-in time the day before we sail. That gives us time for a quick nap and still a chance to enjoy the city, and the next morning we get to the ship refreshed, on time, and without any stress. When we sail from Florida, we fly in at least one night early.
